I love how your partner wasn’t like “for my first garden I’ll grow garlic because it grows well around here and I need a win”. Instead they were like “what are some of the awesomest plants?”

It’s part of the pantheon of reasons I love them. They are practical when they need to be, but whimsical when it comes to other things.

That year we each had our own box garden.

My youngest planted beets and carrots and eggplants. My eldest wants broccoli and Brussels sprouts.

I went with tomatoes and cucumbers because I love them.

My partner had the weirdest garden. Full of strange colours and plants that didn’t make sense. It was magic.

And the fifth box was full of pumpkins, melons and squash.

That was my favourite garden ever. It was beautiful delicious chaos for us and all the creatures who visited.
