A rest is in order
…Taking Tuesday off
(Last year on May 7th, the magnolia tree in my front yard was in full bloom. This year it is waiting. Smart tree.)
I’m standing in The Rosefinch Post for my very first shift back after taking nearly a year off to run Curious & Kind.
It’s strange how some places feel like home. I came in today and my boss came down the stairs excited to see me and said “Wake and Bake!” Because he was about to bake and my name is wake.
I say boss. But the two people who own this building and this space are two of my dearest friends. When I arrived in Nova Scotia we had only ever chatted on the internet. We bonded over being folks who loved the idea of wondrous potions and drinks and tonics for people who don’t and are not at all interested in alcohol culture. I had tried Temperance Tonics and fell in love with the fact that someone cared enough to make something beautiful in a bottle.
I had intended to carry them at my third iteration of Curious & Kind…but they moved to Nova Scotia…and then…I was moving to Nova Scotia…
And my friend Audra Williams invited me to come chat in her garden. I could feel the warmth of her heart through the messages she sent. And the love that her partner have for each other and their cats is…really beautiful.
When they were working diligently to get Rosefinch up and running as a post office, and a cafe and a community space…I could see their vision so clearly. All they needed was a little bit of help.
…so I offered and they accepted. And that’s when my Magical Mondays began here. Port Medway is a small village, of about 225 people, and it is ensconced by the ocean.
This morning when I arrived, I could HEAR the ocean from the front door.
I did a little video, so you can hear the magic, and walk through the space with me.
I asked my boss what he wanted me to do…and he said “just be you”. And I nearly cried.
Today I made a playlist for my Mondays.
You can listen along with me if you’d like 💖
It’s so quiet here today. Just the gentle chatting a group of octogenarians in the corner drinking coffee and reminiscing. Amanda Lowe W on the speaker.
I’ve made them their coffees and my playlist is just about long enough for a couple hours.
And I’ll just make my tiny book on the counter right here.

Sorry, Pantry in the Pines

It’s good to be back.
Heart,
Wake

I loved the video. 🥰
The sound of the ocean is so stimulating and so deeply calming at the same time.
The tour, that included popping behind the counter, felt like a privileged worker's perspective. Switch on the coffee machine! - And all those teapots made me smile. The tea and conversation potential!
Finally, walking back outside, to the sound of gulls and ocean, felt like walking back home in some way (even though I don't live by the coast).
Thank you, Wake.
Yes! I get to be a witch in a story! #lifegoals
